If you've applied for naturalization and your Green Card is about to expire, you may be worried about what to do. The good news is that USCIS has a policy that helps N-400 applicants in this situation.
Your Status Doesn't Expire
First, it's important to understand that while your Green Card (the physical card) can expire, your lawful permanent resident status does not expire—unless you naturalize or your status is terminated. The Green Card is simply proof of your status.
Automatic 24-Month Extension
According to USCIS, effective December 12, 2022, if you properly submit Form N-400 for naturalization, you will receive a receipt notice that automatically extends the validity of your Green Card for 24 months from the "Card Expires" date printed on your card.
How to Use the Extension
To prove that your Green Card validity has been extended, you must present both documents together:
- Your Permanent Resident Card (Green Card), even if expired
- Your Form N-400 receipt notice
This combination serves as valid proof of your lawful permanent resident status for purposes such as employment verification (Form I-9) and travel authorization.
What If Your Green Card is Lost, Stolen, or Destroyed?
If your Green Card has been lost, stolen, or destroyed, you generally must file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, to get a new one. The automatic extension only works if you have your physical Green Card to present along with the N-400 receipt notice.
Keep Your Green Card Safe
As a lawful permanent resident, you must have valid, unexpired proof of your status in your possession at all times. Applying for naturalization does not change this requirement. Keep your Green Card and N-400 receipt notice in a safe place where you can access them when needed.
Focus on Your Interview Preparation
Now that you know your Green Card situation is covered, you can focus on what really matters: preparing for your citizenship interview and test. With Citizenry, you can practice unlimited mock interviews with virtual USCIS agents and study with flashcards, audiobooks, and quizzes.
